It's no secret that the Duchess of Cambridge has access to all of the royal jewels. She'll sometimes borrow a tiara or necklace from the Queen, and of course, Prince William gave her Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring when he asked her to marry him in 2010. But yesterday during the royal wedding, Kate Middleton was sporting a brand-new piece that we've never seen before.

To match her stunning Alexander McQueen primrose yellow dress, Kate wore a magnificent new citrine ring on her right hand.

Many outlets are speculating that this flashy ring was a gift from Prince William after the birth of their third child Prince Louis in April. This could very well be the case, but why citrine we wonder?

The April birthstone is a diamond, so if the ring is actually a yellow diamond then that would make perfect sense! However, as a gemstone, citrine represents energy and is known to "give life." According to Crystal Vaults, if a citrine sphere is given to a newborn, it brings health, happiness, and intelligence.

Or, maybe it was just a ring Kate already had in her collection and she trotted it out to match her light-yellow royal wedding outfit. After all, it definitely completed her look. Then again, she's sported the same dress before, and has never paired this ring with the look.
