Stranger Things Season 3 premiered three years ago, and it's easy to forget just how wild the show could get. But each season gets more horrifying than the last, with a new indescribably freaky creature, and usually, Eleven being pushed to the edge to try and put a stop to everything.

Last we saw our monster-fighting kids, Will, Jonathan, and Eleven, moved away from Hawkins. And Eleven not only lost her powers due to an injury from the Mind Flayer (the third season's big bad guy), but also lost her father figure in Jim Hopper, who seemingly died in an explosion. Although as we now know from a previous teaser trailer, he's alive and in a chain gang in Russia.

In the newest trailer for the Season 4 (which premieres on May 27), we see the kids begin to grapple with the aftermath of that wild mall fight from Season 3. Max grieves her brother's death, Eleven tries to make friends in high school, and Joyce gets a peculiar package from Russia.

Plus, in a recent interview with Deadline, creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed the next season will be longer than previous ones, and every episode will be at least an hour, if not more. They described it as their "Game of Thrones season" and "epic." There's no doubt it's going to be the biggest season of the show yet, with extremely high stakes.

So, here's everything we know about the new creature in Season 4 of Stranger Things.

What's the monster in the Stranger Things Season 4 Trailer?

In the newest trailer for Season 4, we see a creepy humanoid creature never before seen in the Stranger Things universe. In previous seasons, we had the Mind Flayer and the Demogorgon. Since the Mind Flayer took up not one, but two seasons, it makes sense we'd have a new monster to terrorize the Hawkins kids.

One theory from Screen Rant is the new monster is called a Vecna. Stranger Things has major Dungeons & Dragons tie-ins, and the monsters in the show are likened to creatures from the game. Screen Rant posits the game's Vecna, a wizard who transformed into a lich, is the basis for the newest season's villain.

The Stranger Things official Twitter seemingly confirmed this as canon to the show and its world.

In a trailer breakdown with IGN (blogged by Bloody Disgusting), the Duffer Brothers hinted that the Vecna is essentially their version of one of those big bad horror villains you always hear about. “We wanted to introduce the idea right away that there is a major new threat. We’ve always wanted to do our… whatever version of… a Freddy Krueger, or a Pinhead, or a Pennywise," they said. "Because those were the monsters… the villains… supernatural villains that terrified us the most when we growing up.” They added that they've wanted to do a villain like this since Season 2, but it just took a while for them to organically get there within the show.

When the brothers spoke with Deadline, they also mentioned viewers would finally get to see the root of all those supernatural happenings in Hawkins. It's possible the Vecna could be a clue to the real reason there's the Upside Down, or why any of this is happening in a quiet surburban town in Indiana.

Unfortunately, that's all the info we have for now, but we'll probably get more as the season gets closer.
