This Will Be the No. 1 Hair Trend of Summer
The year was 2001. Butterfly clips were all the rage, as were the loose updos and face-framing tendrils that usually accompanied them. Fast forward 20 years to present day and we’re a bit surprised (but no less delighted) to see these beloved styles are making a major comeback.
Perhaps it’s all of the Zoom calls we’re on these days, but the ease of tying our hair into a breezy updo minutes before we need to turn our cameras on is especially appealing.
So, without further ado, we present the top hair trend of summer 2021: the face-framing updo.

Meghan Thee Stallion gave us major flashbacks to our middle school dance days with this voluminous updo she wore to the Grammy’s earlier this year. The key points to nailing this look are height at the top (achieved by curling your hair before pinning it back) and two loose strands on either side of your face.
Karlie Kloss shows us that the messy bun can be super chic. To create the relaxed look, work a texturizing spray throughout your hair and use your fingers to loosely pull everything back from your face. Pull out a few strands in the front and use a flat iron to give them a soft wave.
For shorter strands, we suggest taking a cue from Bella Hadid and separating your hair into several sections to create a more playful look. All you need are a pack of mini elastics and some gel to slick back the front and sides.
The beauty of this trend lies in its versatility. Wear it loose and polished like Karlie above, in funky spikes like Bella or sleek and sculptural like Dua Lipa here. Using a fine-toothed comb, split your hair into a clean center part before slicking it back into a high ponytail. Then, split the ponytail into two separate loops and fasten the ends to the back of your head with bobby pins. Finish with a generous mist of hairspray all over to lock in your look.
