Usually, when one tries to become pregnant, the first thing to do is stop taking birth control. Seems pretty standard, right? But, like, why would a husband need to flush birth control pills down the toilet? Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder are new parents to a baby girl, and apparently, Somerhalder flushed Reed’s birth control pills down the toilet after they decided they were going to try for a baby. Listen, we’re not trying to stick our noses in other people’s business, but that seems very unnecessary. We’re pretty sure Reed got the message to stop taking her pills when you both said: “Hey, let’s have a baby.” We don’t know if popping out each pill into the toilet was needed.

Here’s the story in their own words.

“[He] threw out all my birth control pills,” Reed said with a laugh on the Informed Pregnancy podcast.

Somerhalder clarified, “We decided that we wanted to have children together, and it was just time. But unbeknownst to poor Nikki, she didn’t realize that I was going to go in her purse and take out her birth control. By the way, it was the beginning of the pack, so I had to pop all those suckers out.”

We understand that they both agreed as husband and wife to have children, but did you have to go into her purse though?

Actually, Somerhalder later added, “Actually, now thinking about it, I guess I kind of decided [to start a family].”

Errr…?

At the end of the day, the couple seems more than overjoyed by the decision to have a child together, but let’s just consider this a teachable moment. How about we just let the person with the uterus flush their OWN birth control. Sound good? Cool.
