For Nicole Richie, TV icon and founder of fashion brand House of Harlow 1960, inspiration has always stemmed from her environment, whether that’s her home or the California landscape. So when Etsy approached her about participating in their ongoing Creator Collabs and put those inspirations to paper, a partnership was a no-brainer.
Today the e-tailer has launched a limited edition collection with Richie under the name of her brand, House of Harlow 1960. The 20-plus pieces that comprise the collection, inspired by the desert and California living, were designed by Richie as a collaboration with each of the artisans and their specific mediums. Each maker was handpicked by Richie and the Etsy team.
“I buy from Etsy all the time,” Richie tells ELLE DECOR. “I jumped at the chance of showcasing my favorite shops’ work.”
When approaching Etsy’s network of creators, it was important for Richie to shop local and highlight her community. In addition to California-owned shops, she wanted to prioritize BIPOC creators.
“I’ve lived in California my entire life, and over the last year I’ve been paying more attention to home, reimagining what that our homes look like, and being able to celebrate that with these creators was special,” Richie says.
Having branched into the home space previously with candles in 2018 through a partnership between House of Harlow 1960 and Saks OFF Fifth, Richie says home is a natural extension from her typical designs. “There’s so much overlap between fashion and home,” Richie says. “Each is an incredibly personal way to express ourselves. I think of the categories very similarly.”
The collection leans into the breezy and carefree style we’re used to seeing from Richie. From pillows to tableware to wall art, the collection relies on rich textures and earthy colors to bring those California sensibilities to life. A warm color palette enables each piece to pair seamlessly with the next.
What Etsy does best is showcase creators in their element, and this collection is no exception. From quirky ceramics by Zziee Ceramics in Joshua Tree to boho throw pillows by Shop Cocody in San Francisco, each maker excels at their craft. While most pieces are based in Californian aesthetics, geographically and mentally, there are pieces from all across the country. For example, a stunning concrete and crystal planter from Val (talandbert) in Pittsburgh and ceramic jewelry trays from Emily Reinhardt (theobjectenthusiast) in Kansas City, Missouri.
When asked what her favorite piece of the collection was, Richie immediately cites a chic dog bed made in collaboration with Backup Design, a shop based in Los Angeles. The entire collection reads like a love letter to California and home. Richie explains that “while the collection feels incredibly House of Harlow, there’s an air of freshness about it that I love. It was really rewarding to work with the artisans on what they do best.”
