Nicolas Ghesquière Marks 10 Years at Louis Vuitton
Last November, Louis Vuitton made an announcement that's become quite uncommon: It sent out a press release revealing that Nicolas Ghesquière... was extending his contract at the luxury fashion brand.
In an industry that often sees designers cycle in and out of creative director positions in three-year (or even shorter) intervals, the news was pretty remarkable. Ghesquière's been at the LVMH-owned house since 2013, and, in that time, he's grown the business, helping Louis Vuitton to become the first luxury brand to exceed €20 billion in annual sales, according to the Financial Times. Plus, he's helped sign on (in what appear to be quite strict exclusive contracts) a coterie of A-listers to serve as ambassadors, including Emma Stone, Zendaya, Sophie Turner, Saoirse Ronan and Ana de Armas. (Also in that universe: Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo, Jurnee Smollett, Jennifer Connelly, Gemma Chan.)
Ghesquière's a long-term-relationship kind of designer: Before this, he spent 15 years at Balenciaga. With the Fall 2024 show, which closed out fashion month in Paris, he's celebrating a major milestone at Louis Vuitton, marking 10 years since his debut at the brand with a runway in the Cour Carée at the Louvre, where it all began.
Though technically an anniversary collection, Louis Vuitton Fall 2024 isn't a retrospective — the show notes instead describe it as a "journey in retrospect, with memory as the guide for imagination." Ghesquière is self-referential, but not repetitive, intimating to elements or techniques that have defined his work at the brand. There are the sporty technical jackets fashioned as mini dresses, the satin pieces graphic-printed with illustrations of luggage, the tailored outerwear made out of a plushy scuba material, the gilded separates and the anachronistic brocade coats. There are also thematic throughlines, such as a fascination with historical silhouettes and reinterpreting them through a futurist lens.
"In this creative journey, it's all about charting the right course, following one's own North Star, the curious traveler's essential compass. A stylistic North Star that indicates the right direction and lights the way," the show notes read.
Though set to a positively bumping soundtrack by Nicolas Becker and a dynamic light display by Philippe Parreno in collaboration with James Chinlund, there was little by way of stunts on the runway, save for model-turned-actor-turned-official-ambassador Hoyeon opening the show and Stray Kids' Felix (another face of the brand) making his runway debut. Among the thousands of attendees were Blackpink's Lisa, Arianan Greenblatt, Sarah Paulson, Stone, Blanchett, Ronan and more.
