Demi Lovato’s new documentary Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated premiered on YouTube this week and it’s definitely a must watch for die hard fans who want to know all of the behind-the-scenes details about her life. At one tough point in the film, Nick Jonas even opens up about Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato’s “complicated” relationship.

You might remember that Lovato was on tour with the Jonas Brothers for Camp Rock 2 in 2010 when the singer reportedly punched a back up dancer. Lovato credits this moment, along with support from Nick and Joe, for helping her realize that she had a substance abuse problem.

In the doc, Nick said that her months-long relationship with Joe became a stress point on tour.

“While we were on tour Demi and Joe’s relationship had become really complicated so I was playing the bridge,” Nick said. Demi added that she “friggin’ fell in love” with Joe, which surely didn’t make things easier.

The brothers were more than just professional collaborators at the time. Demi’s manager, John Taylor, credits the them for helping her get into rehab. “It was actually the Jonas Brothers waving the flag, and saw Demi veering in a different direction,” Taylor said.

Nick remembered that time the same way. He said,”It became really good, you know, between she and I for a while, and growing closer than we’ve ever been.” He added, “I remember thinking in my head I felt a bit of pride about it, like selfishly maybe — I was helping her back to being the Demi we know and love. She’s not going to do anything crazy, she’ll be fine, and then this episode happened.”

Since then, things have changed dramatically for Lovato. She’s five and a half years sober, which is no easy feat. And she’s happily single after last year’s split with Wilmer Valderrama after six years together.

Whether you love Demi’s music or not, her doc is an inspiring watch for anyone who is currently coping with a substance abuse issue or is close to someone who’s struggling. Remember: There is hope on the other side.
