NFL Star Chris Smith Dead at 31

Football player Chris Smith has died. He was 31.

The former defensive end for the Cleveland Browns passed away on Monday, April 17. A cause of death has not been revealed. 

The Salisbury, North Carolina native's death was confirmed in an obituary in a local newspaper, the Salisbury Post, stating, "It’s a tragic loss for his family, friends, former teammates and for Rowan County. He had been the ultimate give-back guy and had been a generous donor to local schools and projects. He stayed close to his Rowan County roots no matter where his football odyssey took him."

His former high school football team also tweeted the news, writing, "Rest in Peace to a West Rowan Legend! Chris was a better person than he was player! The impact he had on those around him will be remembered forever!"

The Cleveland Browns also made a statement, writing, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Browns DE Chris Smith. Chris was one of the kindest people, teammates and friends we've had in our organization. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

In college, Smith played for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. He then went on to be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Smith played for several other NFL teams during his eight seasons in the league, including the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, and the Houston Texans. He most recently signed with the XFL Seattle Sea Dragons in March.

Many of Smith's fellow football players paid their respects to the defensive end, including Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku, who tweeted: “Rest in paradise Chris Smith. Hometown hero and a brother to everyone. Such a kind soul. This is Heartbreaking.”

Former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr shared a throwback photo of the two playing together, writing, "Love you bro."

Denver Broncos player Russell Wilson also paid tribute, writing, "RIP Chris Smith Praying for your loved ones."

According to NBC News, Smith's death comes just three years after his girlfriendPetara Cordero–whom he shares a daughter, Haven Harris Smith–was killed after being struck by a vehicle. 

There has been no confirmation of a memorial service at this time.
