About a year ago, Konami announced a whole host of new Silent Hill projects, including a full ground-up remake of Silent Hill 2, a brand-new game in the series, and a smaller game from indie studio No Code. While those projects are still in the oven, one more project was announced, and it’s coming this month.

I would struggle to call Silent Hill: Ascension a game, exactly, because it’s more of an interactive streaming series. Think those strange interactive episodes of Black Mirror and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt that Netflix rolled out a little while back, but a teensy bit more interactive, and with input from more than just one source.

When the app goes live, every streaming day will see a new part of the story play out, and viewers will be tasked with helping make decisions, solving puzzles, and generally influencing the story in one way or another. It has a branching narrative, but the paths that players take and the decisions they make will solidify the story as canon to the Silent Hill series.

What, exactly, that means for future games is anyone’s guess. It’s entirely possible that the events in this game will influence the upcoming games that were announced, but it’s equally likely that Konami will essentially just say “this is canon now” and it’ll never be mentioned or referred to ever again.

Silent Hill: Ascension is being developed by Genvid Technologies, a company that specializes in interactive entertainment, along with JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot Games and Behaviour Interactive. The latter developed Dead by Daylight (and its Silent Hill crossover), while the former hasn’t really done much of note.

So when can you start shaping Silent Hill’s canon? Pretty soon, actually. As you’d expect for a series known for its horror, Silent Hill: Ascension will start streaming at 6pm PT on October 31, 2023. Yup, Halloween. You can pre-register for the app that will let you engage with it on the Silent Hill: Ascension website now. Unfortunately, the stream time is outright terrible for Europeans, but the rest of the world gets off alright.
