Newlywed dies after getting caught in rip current during honeymoon

A 22-year-old newlywed died after being caught in a rip current during his honeymoon, only 3 days after his wedding.

Dalton Cottrell and Cheyenne Hedrick were at Crescent Beach, Fla. on July 30, when the accident occurred. Cheyenne wrote about the incident in a Facebook post on Wednesday, sharing how “wedded bliss turned into a nightmare.”

“Yesterday afternoon while at the beach the Lord decided to call my husband Dalton to come home to Him. There is so much fear and uncertainty coursing through myself,” her post reads. “My parents came down early this morning to be with me as I begin the next journey. Never did I think at 22 would I be a wife and then a widow so quickly.”

While representatives from St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment, CNN accessed a report that details how the rip current took the couple “nearly 100 yards out to sea.”

"Cheyenne advised this was Dalton's 1st time ever in the ocean and started to freak out," the sheriff's office report said. According to CNN, she told deputies her husband began to struggle, and even tried to pull her under when she tried to help.

While people rushed to save him, they were unsuccessful. A St. John’s County Lifeguard and nearby paddle-boarder rushed to help the couple, and though the lifeguard attempted to perform CPR, Dalton suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Flagler Hospital, as reported by CNN.

This isn’t the first time rip currents have proved dangerous. On April 15, a 19-year-old waitress jumped pff a pier to save a young boy who was caught in one. More recently, a dad drowned and died after pulling his 8-year-old daughter to safety from a rip current in the Gulf of Mexico.
