The Newest Pokémon Is An Adorable Yeast-Breathing Bread Dog

For as long as there have been Pokémon, there have been food-inspired creatures. There's the leek-toting duck Farfetch’d and more recent confections like Alcremie. But the upcoming Scarlet and Violet game has the most culinary influences yet: the emblems for each game depict oranges and grapes, and the new Pokémon include Lechonk, an adorable truffle pig, and Smoliv, an olive who is indeed very small. Despite this, nothing could have prepared us for yesterday’s announcement of Fidough, who is an extraordinary gift to fans.

Is Fidough a dog made of bread dough, or a dog that makes bread dough? Early signs suggest both. This little guy certainly looks doughy. It has elastic skin that is, as the game says, is “both firm and soft at the same time” and can stretch and contract—sounds like my sourdough starter.

At the same time, Fidough can ferment things with its breath, which contains yeast. Your milage may vary on whether that’s adorable or disgusting.

All of this begs the question: What kind of baked good will Fidough evolve into?! Fans have turned to the new games’ Spanish influences for clues, speculating that it could be based on the ensaïmada, a pastry from the island of Mallorca. Fidough’s ears certainly resemble the ensaïmada’s spiral shape. It could become another iconic Spanish sweet (a churro, perhaps?), or just a big sourdough loaf. I personally hope that we get the chance to stretch Fidough across a pizza stone to get a pizza dog, because if that’s not man’s best friend, I don’t know what is.

One thing is for sure: Fidough is a hit with fans. Joe Merrick, webmaster of the Pokémon news site serebii.net, tweeted about some technical difficulties following the new trailer yesterday. “Fidough was too much of a good boy for the Serebii servers,” he wrote. “Things are being a bit slow. Please stand by.”

You can catch a good boy of your very own on November 18, when Pokémon Scarlet and Violet comes out on the Nintendo Switch. Each of the new food-inspired Pokémon is expected to evolve into a new form, so you can be sure of even more delicious updates as we approach the games’ release.
