The Newest 'Mandalorian' Episode Was Directed by an MCU Mainstay

The following story contains very light spoilers for Season 2, Episode 2 of The Mandalorian, titled "The Passenger."

• Season 2, Episode 2 of The Mandalorian, titled "The Passenger" was directed by Peyton Reed.

• Reed is best known for directing both Ant-Man movies, in addition to a number of comedies like Yes Man and Bring It On.

• He's also a Star Wars mega-fan, as he's Tweeted many times.

If, when watching The Mandalorian's Season 2 episode "The Passenger," you noticed that the humor felt a little sharper than usual—Baby Yoda eating those eggs was some good stuff—then you are probably onto something, because the episode was directed by someone who certainly knows comedy, but has gotten a fair share of experience with action as well: Peyton Reed.

Reed is best known at this point for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, Michael Douglas, and the rest of the gang in both Ant-Man and Ant-Man & The Wasp so far. But before he got into the expansive world of the MCU, Reed was best known as the director of a number of very funny comedy movies that you've almost certainly seen on cable no less than 20 times each, including Yes Man with Jim Carrey and teen comedy classic Bring It On, and also segments of the cult HBO sketch comedy favorite Mr. Show with Bob and David.

He was also at the helm of The Break Up, a dramedy that not only starred Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, but featured, in a supporting role, future Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau.

Reed isn't the first blockbuster MCU filmmaker to find himself at the helm of an episode of The Mandalorian. Last season, Taika Waititi—who directed Thor: Ragnarok and provided voiceover work as a key character—directed the Season 1 finale, "Redemption," in addition to reprising his Mandalorian voiceover role as IG-11, the bounty hunter-turned-nurse droid. Like Reed, Waititi will also be directing another upcoming MCU movie, in the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder (in addition to his own Star Wars movie).

Reed's involvement in The Mandalorian Season 2 is no surprise; the filmmaker lists it first in his Twitter bio, after all. Still, it's fun to note just how big of a Star Wars fan he is.

On May the 4th in 2018, Reed posted his handbill (would be cool if we still had those!) from the time he saw George Lucas' original film on opening night—while also revealing that May 4th is, in fact, his wedding anniversary. Now that's a true fan.

Reed is also, apparently, a Star Wars purist—he's posted in the past looking for an unedited version of the original film, without any new effects or weird new lines.

He's even tweeted Mandalorian specific jokes—before the show was even a thing.

Now that it's clear that Favreau has a few of his MCU friends in tow for The Mandalorian (remember, Favreau directed Iron Man 1 and 2, and has played Happy Hogan six times, the only thing left to wonder is who could be next. Could Reed or Waititi return? Why not? A Mandalorian episode directed by James Gunn has potential through the roof.

We already know that Robert Rodriguez will get his own episode at some point soon. Obviously this is baseless speculation at this point, but it's all just so fun.
