In case you haven't heard, LEGO bricks aren't just for kids anymore. Intricate LEGO sets intended for adults are available for whatever you're into, be it art and design, travel, history, or pop culture. The newly revealed LEGO Ideas The Starry Night set, based on Vincent van Gogh's famous painting and created in partnership with The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, is the latest fan-submitted idea to be brought to life thanks to the LEGO Ideas platform.

LEGO Ideas Starry Night set details:

  • Dimensions: H: 12" (28cm) W: 15" (38cm) D: 5" (12cm)

  • Number of pieces: 2,316

  • Price: $169.99

  • Release date: June 1, 2022

  • Intended for ages: 18+

The three-dimensional set reimagines the artist's iconic 1889 painting in LEGO form, taking inspiration from van Gogh's textured, swirling brush strokes and unmistakable color palette. Art lovers and LEGO fans alike will enjoy recreating the recognizable masterpiece in brick, from the moon and stars of the night sky, to the village below with its stylistic cypress tree in the foreground. While the set is recommended for ages 18+, this is a project teens can definitely take on, perhaps with the help of an adult.

Woman's Day had the opportunity to see the Starry Night LEGO set in person, unveiled by LEGO Senior Designer Soren Dyrhoj at MoMA, which houses The Starry Night painting. The incredibly detailed set includes a Vincent van Gogh minifigure, complete with his own paint brush, palette with matching colors, and easel decorated with a mini version of the painting on a printed tile. The figure was designed with period-accurate clothing and includes "brush stroke" detailing that is stylistically reminiscent of many of his self-portraits. (And before you ask, LEGO minifigures do not have ears.)

Another unique aspect of this set is that mini van Gogh can be attached to a movable arm to show him painting the scene from various angles, if you wish to display your completed masterpiece on a flat surface. Or, you can use the included hanging feature to put it up on the wall.

The set first goes on sale May 25, 2022, exclusively for LEGO VIPs and MoMA members, then will be available globally on June 2, 2022 for $169.99 online, in LEGO stores and MoMA Design Store in New York City, and online at store.moma.org.

To celebrate the launch of The Starry Night set, the LEGO Group has also launched a competition, encouraging fans to submit their own mini LEGO builds inspired by the night sky. Winning designs will be included in an installation on display in the lobby of the MoMA this summer. Entries are open until June 30, 2022.
