She made the announcement in her bright red coat, which she has worn for each of her four recent protesting arrests: “I needed something red, and I went out and found this coat on sale. This is the last article of clothing that I will ever buy.” 


    The real women of Hidden Figures will receive congressional medals

    The real-life inspirations for the film Hidden Figures, Katherine Johnson, Christine Darden, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, will receive Congressional Gold Medals. The women will be recognized for their work contributing to the success of NASA during the space race. Sen. Kamala Harris, one of the co-sponsors of the Hidden Figures Congressional Medal Act, commented on the “groundbreaking accomplishments” of the four women. “These pioneers remain a beacon for black women across the country, both young and old.”


    Young weed smokers linked to higher risk of stroke

    A new study published in the journal Stroke found that young people who use marijuana have “significantly higher odds of stroke” than nonusers. The risk increased in those who use more frequently. Tarang Parekh, the lead author of the study, spoke with Yahoo Lifestyle and recommends that young marijuana users be honest with their use to practitioners. Physicians should also inquire about usage and provide information about risks.


    American Girl Doll catalog features 4-year-old with Down syndrome

    People are praising the October American Girl doll catalog, which included a 4-year-old model with Down syndrome. The girl’s mother told news outlets that “it’s a big deal for her” because there is not a lot of print and media that include children with the condition.


    Megan Rapinoe dedicates Women of the Year award to Colin Kaepernick

    Megan Rapinoe praised former quarterback Colin Kaepernick this week in her acceptance speech for a Glamour Women of the Year award. Rapinoe described Kaepernick as “doing what was necessary and backing down to exactly nobody.” Kaepernick refused to kneel during the national anthem at NFL games to protest against social injustice. Rapinoe said she wouldn’t be where she is without his influence.
