This Neutral Home Is Hiding an Incredible Agate-Painted Bar
In imagining the interiors of this new build in Palo Alto, California, Sindhu Peruri sought to blend the family’s Italian and Indian roots. “There are a lot of similarities [between them],” the Los Altos-based designer says. “I wanted the interiors and furnishings to reflect their casual and elegant lifestyle.”
Peruri chose a neutral palette enriched with jewel tones that create “small moments of vibrance,” such as the emerald green Kintsugi wallpaper in the vestibule of the powder room and hints of amethyst in the bespoke murals painted by Caroline Lizzaraga. The designer wove together Italian antiques and vintage embroidered textiles from Jaipur, masterfully mixing elements to create a look and vibe well suited to their California ethos. “The details are subtle and don’t overpower,” Peruri notes.
The home's neutral backdrop also plays background to an impressive collection of art that the designer helped curate. "We visited a few galleries in San Francisco. On one of our trips, we walked into Simon Breitbard and immediately fell in love with a few artists there," she recalls, pointing out one of their favorites: an oil painting in the living room by Edite Grinberga. "The play on shadow and light is beautiful and because of its large scale, it fills the room with cheerful light. It’s trickery by art. Even on an overcast day, this room looks light filled because of the painting."
Other noteworthy works include a sculpture above the fireplace by Matt Devine, a whimsical painting by Carol O'Malia in the primary bedroom, and a large collage by Jay Kelly in the dining room "that incorporates the names of their children and their wedding invitation," Peruri reveals.
And in the hallway, an abstract landscape installation of white and gold porcelain flowers hangs above the railing. "The client mentioned that it makes her happy to wake up every morning and pass by this beautiful installation," she says. "I love that walking through this house is a complete visual experience."

Living Room
"I would love to perch on the indigo sofa in the living room and gaze upon the works of several artists, craftsmen and the design community at large that was involved in making it so beautiful," Peruri confesses.

Dining Area
"One of the first pieces we selected was the dining room chandelier by John Pomp," Peruri shares. "The modern suspension can be seen right as you walk in through the front door. I loved the tension between the Mediterranean architecture and the wood beams with this piece," she enthuses. "It’s unexpected and it makes a subtle statement as you walk in the front door."

Bar
"In the living room bar, the niche painted to mimic agate by Caroline Lizarraga sets it apart and is visually striking," Peruri points out.
Office
"My client, who is on constant video calls, has really enjoyed not having to use a virtual background," Peruri laughs. "She apparently gets complimented on it all time. For me, it’s gratifying to have created a space that my client loves using everyday."

Primary Bedroom
In the couple's sanctuary, "it was all about creating this tone on tone mood, soft contrast and texture using a very subtle color palette," Peruri notes. "It is meant to be a calming and restful respite after a long work day."
