Selena Quintanilla forever changed the Tex-Mex music scene with her powerful voice and charisma. With a multitude of celebrities citing her as an inspiration, Selena continues to be celebrated. Now, 25 years after her death, the late Tejano singer’s life is showcased on the small screen in Netflix’s Selena: The Series, which premieres December 4.

The show follows the rise of Selena from a local Texas singer-songwriter to a global music phenomenon. She's portrayed by Twilight actress Christian Serratos — who is of Mexican and Italian descent.

Here are all the details to know about Selena: The Series:

What is Selena: The Series about?

Described as a “coming of age story,” Selena: The Series chronicles Selena’s life as she and her family make “life-changing choices” all in the name of musical success. Originally from Lake Jackson, Texas, Selena began her singing career at age nine, performing in her family’s band, Selena y Los Dinos, alongside her brother, A.B. Quintanilla III, and her sister, Suzette Quintanilla.

Selena grew up to become one of the most influential crossover artists, resonating with the Latinx community and gaining momentum among English speakers. The artist went on to win Best Mexican-American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to do so. The following year, Selena performed for a record-breaking audience at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.

Tragically, a month later on March 31, 1995, Selena was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the founder of her fan club. At 23 years old, Selena died from a gunshot wound in Corpus Christi, Texas. Selena: The Series takes a closer look at Selena’s familial relationships, her one-of-a-kind fashion style, and her marriage with husband, Chris Perez.

When does Selena: The Series premiere?

Selena: The Series premieres Friday, December 4, 2020. Season 1 of the scripted show features nine episodes, several of which are named after songs performed by Selena, like "Dame Un Beso," "Dulce Amor," "My Love," and "Que Creías."

The official trailer (below) gives fans an overview of Selena as a child, who then transitions to a life on the road with her family. Selena, of course, later finds love in the most unexpected place.

In November, Christian told Los Angeles Times that she finished filming season 2 of the show. That said, Netflix has not yet announced an official premiere date for Selena: The Series season 2.

Who is in the cast of Selena: The Series?

Throughout the past two decades, the Quintanilla family has dedicated themselves to preserving the memory of the multi-talented artist. Selena: The Series is another milestone in their incredible effort to continue sharing the legend’s life and music.

In December 2018, Netflix confirmed that the Quintanilla family was helping develop and executive produce Selena: The Series alongside creator and executive producer Moisés Zamora. The main cast is comprised of:

  • Christian Serratos as Selena

  • Madison Taylor Baez as young Selena

  • Ricardo Chavira as Abraham Quintanilla Jr., Selena’s father

  • Seidy Lopez as Marcella Quintanilla, Selena’s mother

  • Gabriel Chavarria as A.B. Quintanilla III, Selena’s brother

  • Noemi Gonzalez as Suzette Quintanilla, Selena's sister and best friend

  • Jesse Posey as Chris Perez, Selena's husband

"I want people to just have fun when they watch the show because it’s Selena," Christian told Good Housekeeping. "We love Selena, we love the music, and we love the fashion and all these really iconic moments. Who else made cow print as popular as Selena?"

"[Her story] is also something that’s specific because this is a Mexican-American family from South Texas. That’s me, that’s who I am, that’s what my family is. This is partly my story, too, and it means so, so much," added Ricardo.

"It doesn't matter what culture you come from, what background. It's hard not to be inspired by her," Jesse explained.
