M. Night Shyamalan's latest film, Knock at the Cabin - an adaptation of Paul Tremblay's novel, 'The Cabin at the End of the World' - hit cinemas earlier this month. The plot follows a young girl, Wen (Kristen Cui), who, with her parents is taken hostage by four armed strangers as they holiday in a remote cabin in the woods.

The intruders, Leonard (Dave Bautista), Redmond (Rupert Grint), Adriane (Abby Quinn) and Sabrina (Nikki Amuka-Bird) force Wen's parents Eric (Jonathan Groff) and Andrew (Ben Aldridge) to sacrifice one of their family in a bid to prevent the apocalypse. However, they must decide whether the strangers are telling the truth and whether the world really is about to end.

While the finale in Shyamalan's version is a lot less dark than the book, many viewers are still looking for answers to piece the film together. So, here's everything we know about the ending of Knock at the Cabin...

What happened at the end?

After the intruders break in, the leader, Leonard explains to Eric and Andrew that if they don't choose a family member to sacrifice, they will all survive but the world will end.

He then tells them that every time they say "no" (or refuse to give themselves up), one of the strangers will die and a plague will let loose on humanity. This premonition soon comes true, as Redmond is killed followed by TV reports that the west coast of the US has been affected by a deadly earthquake, causing a tsunami.

After Eric and Andrew refuse to sacrifice a family member again, Adriane is then killed. Her death is swiftly followed by news reports of a virus breakout that is fatal to children.

Andrew then manages to escape from the cabin and runs to his car to reach for his gun. He re-enters the cabin and as Sabrina tries to stop him, he shoots her. However, Leonard ends up overpowering him and taking the gun.

Leonard tries to convince the couple one last time that they are telling the truth, turning on the TV to reveal new reports that planes have started to fall from the sky. Reciting the report almost word for word before the news reporter reads them, he claims he saw the story in a vision.

Leonard then reveals that they're nearing the end, and before he takes his own life, explains to Eric and Andrew that they only have minutes to sacrifice someone if they want to save the world. While Andrew still insists it's not true, despite the sky darkening, Eric reveals that he thinks Leonard, Redmond, Adriane and Sabrina are interpretations of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse: Malice, Nurturing, Healing and Guidance.

Upon this realisation, Eric begs Andrew to kill him so that Wen can have a future and the world won't end. Viewers then see Wen as a lawyer, meeting up with Andrew in the future, which suggests that Eric ended up sacrificing himself. Sure enough, Andrew then kills Eric, and the forest and cabin begin to burn to the ground.

Andrew escapes with Wen, finding Leonard's car and driving into the nearest town. While sitting in a diner, they see news reports of the terrible events (the tsunami and the plague) miraculously disappearing, leading them to realise that Eric's sacrifice did in fact, save the world and reverse the apocolypse...
