Netflix Unveils First Teaser for “The Baby-Sitters Club”

Attention! This meeting of The Baby-Sitters Club is officially called to order.

After much anticipation, the first teaser for the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Ann M. Martin's popular book series is finally here. And although the clip is relatively short (just a little over 30 seconds), it manages to pack in a super-nostalgic punch while introducing us to the iconic friends who start a baby-sitting business — all while managing school, family, and friendships.

The teaser begins with the sound of a phone ringing (it must be a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday!) as the camera slowly pans over a cluttered floor. We see a long purple phone cord, a baseball and hat, plenty of candy (hi Claudia), and a collection of colorful hair accessories, before finally the pièce de résistance comes into view: a very ‘90s see-through landline phone.

At last, we see the original BSC members huddled around the phone: Kristy Thomas (Sophie Grace), Mary-Anne Spier (Malia Baker), Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada), Stacey McGill (Shay Rudolph), and Dawn Shaefer (Xochitl Gomez). Kristy, clad in her signature baseball hat, reaches for the phone right before the screen goes black and we hear her say: “Good afternoon, Baby-Sitters Club!” OK, the nostalgia is too much!

Netflix’s adaptation of the beloved series was first announced in February 2019, and will also star Alicia Silverstone as Kristy's mother, Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer. The series, which contains over 100 books, has also recently been given new life in the form of an audio experience, with the first five titles read by Elle Fanning.

It might have been a couple decades since The Baby-Sitters Club first hit the shelves of bookstores, but it's clear that the themes of friendship and determination still resonate with generations today. As Martin previously told Teen Vogue, “I hear from many adults who read the books when they were younger that they found the stories and characters comfortable and comforting. We can certainly use a bit of comfort in these times that can feel scary and unpredictable.”

The Baby-Sitters Club will be available to stream on Netflix on July 3.
