Sex Education enthusiasts, gather around because we finally have news on season three!
Netflix first announced the beloved British series had been renewed for a third season in February 2020, just a month after its sophomore season premiered globally. Production for the new season was meant to start in May 2020 but, like many Netflix productions across the world, it was delayed in April 2020 in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Filming finally resumed in September 2020 and, nine months later, we finally have a release date.
On June 24, the streaming giant announced season three of Sex Education will premiere on Friday, September 17, 2021. Much like the two previous seasons, we will also be getting eight brand new episodes this time.
Aside from the official launch date announcement, Netflix has also given us a peek of what’s to come with six new teaser pictures – and it looks like Moordale High will be seeing quite a few changes when class is back in session. The new pictures show the students clad in Moordale High uniforms, probably courtesy of one of the new characters that Netflix unveiled last September: new headmistress Hope.
With Headmaster Groff on leave, Hope is now the person calling the shots at the school. Played by Jemima Kirke, Hope is a Moordale High alumna that plans to turn the school “back into the pillar of excellence it’s always been.” Jason Isaacs, whom you might recognize from the Harry Potter film franchise, is also joining the series as Peter Groff. Peter is described as “Mr. Groff’s more successful and not very modest older brother, who Mr. Groff has been staying with in the wake of his separation from Mrs. Groff.” Indra Ové will play Anna, Elsie’s (aka. Maeve’s sister) foster mom. Dua Saleh will have their acting debut playing Cal, a non-binary student “who instantly clashes with Hope’s new vision for the school.”
The first pics show a small interaction between Cal and Moordale’s all-star swimmer Jackson Marchetti. The pics also seemingly let us know that Eric and Otis are still bosom buddies; as are Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) and Maeve, who now sports her brunette hair with bangs and blue tips. And the season’s synopsis is even more revealing: “It’s a new year, Otis is having casual sex, Eric and Adam are official, and Jean has a baby on the way. Aimee discovers feminism, Jackson gets a crush and a lost voicemail still looms. Prepare for commitment animals, alien phenomena, vulva cupcakes, and much more of Madam Groff.”
Picture us intrigued. Check out Season 3’s pics below:
