Netflix Raises Prices Again As Cheaper Subscriptions Phased Out

Netflix has bumped up the price of its services once again in the US, UK and France.

Prices in the US for the ad-free subscription jumped by $3 per month to $22.99, with the basic subscription going up by $2 to $11.99. The cost of premium in the UK goes up by £2 to £17.99, and the basic by £1 to £7.99. French viewers will need to pay an extra 2 euros for the high-end service, to euro 19.99.

It also confirmed that it will no longer be offering the basic tier to new subscribers in Australia, Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico and Brazil from next week. Those regions will be offered the most expensive tier, or the ad-supported option. The basic tier has already been phased out for new subs in the UK, US, Italy and Canada.

The ad-supported tier makes up 30 percent of all new subscriptions, according to Netflix.

Over the last three months Netflix said it added 8.8 million new subscribers, with the numbers boosted by the clamp down on password sharing.

One of the stand-out hits for Netflix has been the live action One Piece series, according to the company, noting that it’s a local story that reaches global audiences. Season 2 of that show has already been written despite the ongoing actors' strike.
