We love a good Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy but the actress and singer is switching it up with her latest role in Netflix’s The Mother.
As Jennifer's first thriller since 2015's The Boy Next Door, it's safe to say that we can't wait to see her kick ass and take names.
Here's everything that you need to know about the upcoming Netflix movie.
What is The Mother about?
According to Netflix, in The Mother, “a military-trained assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she's never met from ruthless criminals gunning for revenge.” And you might be able to guess which character Jennifer plays.
In the trailer we see Jennifer’s ‘The Mother’ strike a deal with the FBI, promising to stay away from her daughter to keep her safe. But when her 12-year-old is tracked down all those years later, it's time for Jennifer’s character to come out of hiding to go to her rescue and ultimately teach her how to survive.
"I'm a killer, but I'm also a mother, and I will die protecting her," Jennifer’s character says.
And let’s just say, we wouldn’t want to mess with ‘The Mother’!
We see her doing pull ups, driving motorcycles and generally looking like a badass.
When will it be released?
The Mother will be dropping on the streaming platform on 12th May – which just so happens to coincide nicely with Mother’s Day weekend in the US.
And this isn’t the first or last that we’ll see of Jennifer on the streaming platform, with her signing a multiyear production deal with them. Her first production was the documentary Halftime, which was added to Netflix in 2022, that gave us an insight into her Super Bowl halftime performance with Shakira, as well as her Oscars campaign for the movie Hustlers and much more.
There’s also a murder-mystery – adapted from the bestselling book ‘The Cipher’ by Isabella Maldonado – still to come at a later date. So it’s all good news for J-Lo fans.
Who else is in the cast?
Alongside Jennifer, we’ll see Joseph Fiennes (who you may know from The Handmaid’s Tale) and Gael Garcia Bernal taking on the role of the dangerous men that our heroine is up against. Lucy Paez plays her daughter, while Omari Hardwick (also from Power) and Paul Raci will be allies to Jennifer’s character.
Nick Caro – who directed the Mulan live action remake – directs.
We’ll certainly be counting down the days until The Mother lands on Netflix.
