The Sandman is Netflix at its best. The adaptation took Neil Gaiman’s epic DC comic book universe and perfectly captured the story’s gothic, dreamy aesthetic. Starring Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Boyd Holbrook and more, The Sandman follows Morpheus/Dream, who is captured one day by an occultist. After a century, he escapes, only to find his kingdom destroyed. To rebuild and regain his power, he embarks on a quest to recover his magical tools, find rogue dreams and nightmares, and even has to stop supernatural happenings from erasing the universe itself.

Season 1 is a fantasy masterpiece, dutifully adhering to the complex world Gaiman created decades ago, while still offering an exciting screen adaptation both newcomers and longtime fans can enjoy. The show creators were so set on capturing the feel of the comic, they even purposefully gave The Sandman a dreamy, hazy quality. It’s a great late night show, one to watch with the lights off to immerse yourself in the story. The Sandman’s ten episodes fly by when you watch, earning Netflix’s descriptor as the place to find bingeable television.

The Sandman Season 2 is still somehow not definite yet, but if the show continues, there’s ample material to pull from. The original comic run (and subsequent issues) has various unrelated stories and characters worthy of television treatment, meaning the show could go on for years without needing to veer away from the source material.

In fact, Netflix just provided The Sandman fans with an unexpected treat.

A Bonus The Sandman Episode Just Dropped

Starring Sandra Oh, David Tennant, Michael Sheen, and even Neil Gaiman himself, The Sandman now has one bonus episode on Netflix, available to watch right now. Spanning the issues #17-20 in the original comic called Dream Country, the extra episode follows a Siamese cat and a struggling writer who cross paths with Morpheus.

The first story, “A Dream of a Thousand Cats,” is The Sandman’s first animated episode. A stacked cast play various people and cats. The second is live-action, much like the rest of the series, and is called “Calliope.”

Hopefully Netflix’s new episode is a good sign for the future of The Sandman, and proof they want to give fans more stories about Dream, Death, and the rest of the Endless soon.
