Netflix may have announced the end of House of Cards yesterday, less than 24 hours after news broke of allegations made about its star Kevin Spacey, but they don't appear to want to distance themselves from the property itself just yet.

According to Variety, the streaming service is in early discussions about launching a spin-off of the series. This new show would revolve around original House of Cards character Doug Stamper, the political aide played by actor and frequent scene-stealer Michael Kelly.

Eric Roth, who served as executive producer for the first four seasons of House of Cards, is attached to write the show, which would mark the first time an original Netflix series has been given a spin-off.

House of Cards, which opened to rave reviews in 2013, has been widely credited for legitimising the streaming service and making it the unstoppable beast it is today.

The sixth, and final season of House of Cards is currently in production in Baltimore.

Sources told Variety that the decision was a long time coming and not related to the allegations to have engulfed Spacey in the last few days, but the timing is interesting.

Star Trek actor Anthony Rapp took to Buzzfeed on Sunday night accusing Spacey of historical sexual harassment when he was 14 and the star was 26. The Oscar-winning actor was accused of trying to seduce the child by laying down on top of him at a party at his apartment in New York in 1986.

Spacey, who is also facing backlash for publicly coming out while simultaneously apologising for the alleged incident, said in a statement that he could not remember the incident that Rapp described, but said he was "horrified" by the story.
