Netflix canceled ANOTHER female-led show, and Twitter is petitioning to bring it back
We’re sad to report that after just one season on the streaming site, Netflix has officially canceled the animated comedy Tuca & Bertie. Created by Lisa Hanawalt, a production designer and producer on BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie starred the voices of Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong as two avian BFFs grappling with the daily struggles and wins of being ladies (and birds) in the 21st century, all while showing the world that women can be gross, too.
“Lisa Hanawalt created a relatable yet whimsical world in Tuca & Bertie,” Netflix said in a statement per Entertainment Weekly. “We’re grateful to Lisa, and her fellow executive producers Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, and EPs/stars Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, along with all of the writers and animators for sharing the funny and dynamic female bird duo of Tuca and Bertie with the world.”

Hanawalt’s Tuca & Bertie joins the growing list of female-created shows Netflix has nixed as of late. The growing roster includes Michelle Wolf’s The Break with Michelle Wolf, Maria Bamford’s Lady Dynamite, Chelsea Handler’s Chelsea, and Jessica Jones.
Netflix is not ordering a second season of Tuca & Bertie.

“Tuca & Bertie is everything I wanted it to be: beautiful, funny, fresh, loving, horny, weird, experimental, comforting, and deep,” Hanawalt added in another tweet on July 24th. “The whole team put our hearts and asses into this show, and I’m so proud of it.”

Well, this sucks. It’s not every day that we see female representation like the kind Tuca & Bertie brought to the table. We’re sad to see it go, but we’re glad we have one perfect season to watch over and over.
