Netflix’s New Buddy Cop Comedy Stars Josh Groban and Tony Danza

There’s a new original comedy coming to Netflix, and it stars Josh Groban and Tony Danza in an unlikely—but extremely likeable—pairing. The show is The Good Cop, and it’s set to debut on Netflix this month. It features Groban, a musician-singer-actor extraordinaire, and Danza, an actor well known for the 1980s classics Taxi and Who’s the Boss? They’re a father-son duo who live together and solve mysteries together, but they couldn’t be more different.

This isn’t the first acting gig for Groban, who we’ve seen on stage not only in concert but also on Broadway in the musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, and on screen in the film Crazy, Stupid, Love. He plays Tony Jr., a straight-laced, play-by-the-book detective beleaguered by his father, Tony Sr., who’s played by Danza, and who, we come to find out, has spent 7 years in prison in upstate New York.

Netflix sums it up: “When he's not solving murders, a pathologically honest detective tries to keep an eye on his crooked but kindhearted dad.” Comedy ensues. The series also stars Monica Barbaro (Unreal, Chicago Justice) and Isiah Whitlock, Jr (The Wire, Goodfellas).

The Good Cop is billed as a comedy-mystery, meaning we’ll be getting plenty of laughs in addition to crime solving in each episode. It’s a New York City-set show in the vein of network-favorite Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but it also gets much of its DNA from the award-winning detective procedural series Monk. In fact, the creator of Monk, Andy Breckman, is behind The Good Cop as well. Another Monk alum, Randy Zisk, is executive producing.

The Good Cop will be released on Netflix on September 21, 2018.
