Netflix's "Soundtrack" Trailer Proves There's a Perfect Song for All of Life's Curveballs

From falling in love to heartbreak.

Soundtrack, a new Netflix original series arriving to the streaming platform on December 18, brings to life a tale of unexpected romances occurring between aspiring Los Angeles artists.

In the first trailer for the show, starring Jenna Dewan, Paul James, Callie Hernandez, and more, we're introduced to the idea that the most important parts in life are accompanied by a soundtrack. Based on this initial glimpse at the series, the lives of these artists are filled with love, dreams of superstardom, and some struggle. We get a sneak peek at some of the various music from the series, including "songs about longing and desire," ballads about "the struggle to find love," and what sort of pop hits are the best heartbreak anthems (the show goes with Sia's "Elastic Heart," and we have to agree). For each soundtrack, a scene from the series quickly plays out, and we watch as the characters find themselves attempting to grapple with every curveball life throws their way.

As one might guess from the title, there are a number of musical performances in Soundtrack, and as Entertainment Tonight explained in their official debut of the clip, the musical numbers will play a central role. "It's not your typical musical where you're singing on a stage or walking down the hall singing a love song. Every song matters to the plot and every song is a huge production number," Joshua Safran, the show's creator said. However, the actors themselves won't be singing these songs a la a show like Glee. Instead, they're lipsyncing.

We'll have to wait and see what kind of "huge" numbers hit our screens when the series debuts later this month, but as Safran revealed, the '90s and even Christmas music provide some inspiration. Now we just have to decide what we're going to listen to while we wait.
