Netflix's "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" Reboot Found Its Two Aunts

Hilda and Zelda, back at it again.

Clearly, a hearty dosage of witchcraft was conjured up for this pitch-perfect casting.

Netflix’s upcoming Sabrina reboot — which is being toted as a darker, edgier version of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch series from the ‘90s — has announced who will be portraying Sabrina’s lovable guardians, Aunt Hilda and Aunt Zelda. And while the actors might not exactly be household names, the supernatural likeness between them and the original aunts we would hope and expect is there.

Miranda Otto, who you might recognize from her popular roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy or Homeland, will be taking over the witchy reins as Zelda. And while the portrayal of Zelda was more along the lines of of a stern-but-kind task-master to Sabrina in the original series, TV Line reports that her character will be significantly more sinister: “Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night. She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.”

Similarly, Lucy Davis — who most recently found mainstream success with her supporting role in Wonder Woman — will be portraying the more bubbly, but still equally sinister, Hilda in the series. Deadline reports that just like Zelda, her character will also deviate from the original series with her personality traits: “More nurturing than Zelda, Hilda’s motherly nature and warm sense of humor belie a wicked, ghoulish streak. She is as adept at brewing spite jars against her family’s enemies as she is at concocting love potions for the students at Baxter High.” Interesting.

Aside from the casting of these two aunts, Mad Men actor Kiernan Shipka is confirmed to take on the titular role of Sabrina — truly perfect casting — and we also already have a sneak peak at what Salem the Cat will look like. Now, if we only knew who will voice him!
