The New Nest Cam With Floodlight Is a Shining Upgrade to Home Security

Google recently added the Nest Cam with Floodlight to its range of smart home security devices, which also include the battery-powered Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor) and the wired indoor Nest Cam. As the name suggests, this new option is an outdoor Nest Cam that comes attached to two powerful LED lights.

Even though the standard Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor) does well in low-light conditions, the new dual LED lamps included on the Nest Cam with Floodlight promise to deliver even brighter, clearer nighttime video footage when triggered by an event.

With a starting price of $279.99, the Nest Cam with Floodlight illuminates a wide area outside your home. This not only improves your surveillance, but also serves as a more effective deterrent to potential intruders. It also functions as a handy porch light when you need it.

If you’re ready to upgrade your home security, the Nest Cam with floodlight is available now via the Google Store.

Better video quality is an obvious benefit of strapping two super bright LED lights to a security camera — making the Nest Cam with Floodlight ideal for the darkest areas around your home — but there’s more to it than that.

It combines the convenience of a motion-activated porch light with the intelligence of a smart home camera. As existing Nest Cam owners are likely aware, Google’s home surveillance tech is pretty handy at identifying objects in motion.

With the ability to distinguish between people, pets and cars, the camera can be configured to react only to specific event types. Additionally, the Nest Cam itself controls the activation of the floodlights, rather than a basic motion sensor. This means you get light when you need and not when you don’t.

The floodlight can also be controlled manually via the Google Home app. Using the app, you can turn it on or off at will, or set options such as brightness or activation duration.

This should make it quite a handy tool when trying to unload shopping from the car after sundown, for example, or for helping guests find their way safely to your door, while also shoo-ing off package thieves and other undesirables more effectively.

A Familiar Face

Besides the inclusion of those bright floodlights, the camera component is effectively the same Nest Cam (outdoor and indoor) model that Nest users are already familiar with.

Slickdeals had high praise for the standalone device in our recent Nest Cam review. It’s a brilliant little camera, with support for 1080p HDR video, a wide 180 degree viewing angle, effective night vision and a loud speaker for two-way communication.

In addition, certain smart features that were previously locked behind a paywall are included for free with the Nest Cam with Floodlight. Smart detection of animals, vehicles and people is unlocked as standard. This means users can, for example, keep an eye on pets, filter alerts to people only or program the camera to ignore passing cars.

Additionally, the Activity Zones feature is now available at no extra cost, allowing all owners to designate high-traffic areas that the motion detection should simply ignore. This should further cut down on those bright floodlights being activated when you don’t need them. Users also get three hours of reviewable event history footage for free.

Get the Most Out of Nest Cam’s Awareness

If you’re looking for even more customization options and features, Google’s Nest Aware service (starting at $6 per month) offers 30 days of event video history. It also unlocks the ability to use the Nest Cam’s Familiar Face Detection feature.

With this feature active, the Nest Cam learns to identify familiar faces and can send alerts that tell you specifically who it sees or when an unfamiliar face is approaching.

Finally, if you’re worried about installation, Google designed the Nest Cam to be easy enough for owners to install themselves, with the Google Home app walking you through the entire process. However, the company also offers professional installation for $179.

You can place your order for the Nest Cam with Floodlight via the Google Store.
