Things got very awkward when How I Met Your Mother actor Neil Patrick Harris made an appearance on The View earlier this week.

The interview started off great: Sunny Hostin asked the Broadway star about his and hubby David Burtka's adorable 8-year-old twins, Harper and Gideon. But things quickly took a turn when Neil started talking about his kids' birthday party. Out of nowhere, Whoopi Goldberg began giggling to herself. When the whole table asked why she was laughing, she pointed at Neil and said "I'm laughing because I remember you at that age."

This prompted the 45-year-old actor to begin talking about when he and Whoopi worked together on his first movie ever in 1988 entitled Clara's Heart.

"You know, I did my first movie ever with Whoopi Goldberg - a movie called Clara's Heart. [And] we worked together on that," Neil explained. "And she told me - I was 15, 16 years old - she told me on my last day of shooting that in 10 years time she was going to have sex with me."

After some uncomfortable laughter, Whoopi responded "I might've" before clarifying that Neil had "many questions as a kid, and that she told him to 'wait 10 years and I'll walk you through it.'"

She continued: "See, in those days, you could actually have some fun like that. You can't do that now. People get very upset now."

Neil said that he wasn't offended by her comment and instead remarked that he was "looking forward to it." Whoopi immediately shot back,"Well, if I can find it, you can have it."

Despite a few laughs coming from the studio audience, the reaction on Twitter was very different. Many didn't find the comment amusing and thought it crossed the line in a big way:

Neither Neil or Whoopi have spoken out about the incident since the episode aired.

Watch The View on weekdays starting at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
