Last night’s NCIS: Los Angeles was one of the most intense yet. Not only was it the 250th episode, but Eric Christian Olsen, who plays Deeks, also co-wrote it—and he did not go easy on himself.

The main plot revealed more of Hetty’s (Linda Hunt) backstory, as one of her former recruits returned to seek revenge on her and her team. The struggle put nearly every character’s life on the line, but fans were particularly stressed about the future of our favorite newlyweds, Deeks and Kensi (Daniela Ruah).

At one point, Deeks was stuck in a room with a bomb, and the outcome was really not looking good. Kensi was doing everything she could to save him, but he made her stop so he could give her what can only be described as a goodbye speech.

For the first time in a while, viewers were legitimately worried that this was the end of Deeks. (Lasalle did just die on NCIS: New Orleans, so you can imagine why people might be on edge.)

Everyone was concerned that they were going to leave us with a “To Be Continued,” but thankfully, we did see Deeks survive, thanks to Kensi. So his passionate farewell to his wife can now just be filed under “reasons we love Deeks” instead of “reasons we’ll miss him.”

The rest of the hour was no less stressful. The battle between Hetty and Akhos Laos (Carl Beukes) finally came to a dramatic head that Akhos did not survive. It also led to a tense conversation between Hetty and Callen (Chris O’Donnell) that has us questioning who is going to replace Hetty. Or, if anyone wants to continue on in this career at all.

We’re not sure exactly where NCIS: LA is headed, but we can rest easy knowing Deeks is safe. For now, at least.
