NCIS fans are still coping with the departure of Jack Sloane (Maria Bello) and the death of Emily (Juliette Angelo) on the CBS crime series. But now, their attention is shifting to another possible character exit.

During the March 16 episode of NCIS, we see Gibbs (Mark Harmon) lash out at an alleged animal abuser in the woods and begin choking him before Bishop (Emily Wickersham) ends up pulling him off. Not long after, we see Gibbs being handcuffed. Fast forward to the end, and the top Special Agent winds up being suspended for his actions and asked to turn in his gun and badge. What's more, as teased in episode 11, Gibbs's team is being "reassigned" as a result of the debacle.

This plot line has many folks wondering ...

Is Mark Harmon leaving NCIS as Gibbs?

Of course, something could happen the very next episode and Gibbs's suspension could be forgiven just like that. But the idea of Mark, the show's star and executive producer, walking away is definitely a legitimate concern given all of the character exits we've already seen in season 18. Plus, rumors have been circulating that Mark might be ready to walk away from the show, which he's starred in since 2003.

What's more, The Hollywood Reporter claimed in February that NCIS was waiting to hear whether the network would order a 19th season and that Mark's contract was up this season. The outlet's "sources" also said that when Mark heard CBS would end NCIS if he left the show, he began having talks with the network and producers about returning "for a handful of episodes" should there be a 19th season. Meanwhile, Mark is busy wrapping up his executive producing gig on NCIS: New Orleans, which is coming to an end on May 16.

In other words, it's very possible that fans might see less and less of Gibbs and that the show might actually be wrapping up for good soon. Of course, we don't know anything for sure yet and this is all based on hearsay at the moment. But still, fans should emotionally brace themselves just in case. As viewers have learned over the years, you just don't know what unexpected twist is coming up next on NCIS.
