Truly sad news this morning: Glee actress Naya Rivera has been reported missing following a boat ride with her son, Josey, on Wednesday, July 8. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, which gave a statement to Us Weekly, Naya rented a motorized boat for a three-hour ride on Lake Piru. The boat was not returned on time, so personnel went out looking for her.

“[They] found her boat adrift with Naya’s 4-year-old son asleep on the boat and Naya was nowhere to be found,” the department said in their statement. “This is an active investigation. It is believed that Naya and her son were swimming in the lake near the boat and as they were getting back into the boat, her son made it into the boat and Naya went underwater and did not resurface.”

Josey was found with a life vest on, but there was another vest on board, indicating Naya was not wearing one. A “large-scale search and rescue operation” was conducted in the afternoon and will resume this morning using drone teams, divers, and sonar equipment.

Josey was picked up by Naya’s family, and Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Captain Eric Buschow tells Us Weekly that “it’s still a search and rescue operation based on the circumstances. The fact that she was seen in the water shows there is a high likelihood that she drowned….We aren’t going to go that far right now. All indications point to that, but we are not there yet.”

Please keep Naya and her family in your thoughts.
