Our curls are magic. Let me say that again: Our curls are our crown and should be worn with pride. They are what make us who we are and they are beautiful. Unfortunately, it wasn't until recently that the rest of the world started to see it that way. For centuries, natural hair has been depicted on the big screen as unwanted. We’ve seen it time and time again, Black actresses being asked to straighten, perm, or relax their hair in order to make their curls lay down flat. The good news is times are changing. In recent years, we have seen an increase in the amount of Black characters on TV and in movies sporting their natural curls. Today, you can catch main characters rocking a twist out or bantu knots, sometimes even the occasional fro.
