A Natural Deodorant That Actually Lasts All Day

There a few things in life that I was always resigned to feeling meh about, and deodorant, particularly of the natural variety, was always on that list. I gave up deo with aluminum years ago and found a few options that were good enough, but by and large there was always something that bothered me, whether it was baking soda in the inky list irritating my sensitive skin, or yummy smelling formulations that would start to foam when damp... not great considering the lack of anti-perspirant properties. Good enough always had to do it. Until recently.

In January I was introduced to AKT—a natural deodorant brand that was created by two performers whose original gig was on London's West End. The duo knew something about performing under hot lights—and they formulated a sweat-induced-stink stopper from their experience on the stage.

There are a few reasons why I love the formulation, and the most important reason I am a convert forever is because I don't have to compromise on my values for efficacy. It's naturally derived, the packaging is plastic free, and it doesn't have aluminum or pthalates in the mix. But what it does have is vitamin E, shea butter, and calendula for moisture, while sodium bicarbonate and zinc oxide keep odors at bay. Then, diatomaceous earth and arrowroot duet to keep things dry. And I mean dry. I don't feel like I get any dampness in my pits unless I'm really exerting during a workout, but I don't feel like my skin gets irritated either.

With every other natural deodorant I've ever worn, I'd have to apply at the very least a few times through out the day. And in the summer? I'd have to bring a mini with me and a powder to keep things dry. But with AKT, I really don't. One application a day does it. At the end of the day, I'm dry and there's no hint or even the slightest suggestion of stink. Nothing. Not even on my clothes. I noticed this difference almost immediately, but what sold me is that because I'm a hot sleeper, I often wake up feeling like I'm a little stinky. But ever since I started wearing this deo, that hasn't happened.

Not to be overlooked, AKT also takes the mundane and makes a nice ritual out of it. Because the good stuff comes in an aluminum tube, which you roll out, and apply as you would a moisturizer, it feels like a bit more of an experience than a quick swipe. If you really want to make a treatment out of it, there's a gorgeous metal applicator you can use to elevate the experience.

While I've only tried one of the scents, because each tube is meant to last three months, I can rotate through the fragrances to match what's seasonally appropriate. Once I finish with Sc.1 Orange Grove, I can move on to SC.05 Columbia Road. I can't really ever remember a time when I was excited to use my deodorant, nor can I remember feeling thrilled about the scents, until AKT became my daily ritual. Now, I can't imagine using anything else.
