If you’re a sucker for sugar and you have some time to roam around town today to snag a bunch of free sweet treats, we have great news for you: Today, June 7, is National Doughnut Day, and numerous coffee shops, bakeries and retailers are giving away free doughnuts. (Yes, you read that right — free!)

This isn’t the first time doughnuts have been thrust into the spotlight. The first National Doughnut Day was celebrated in 1938. Apparently, it was a way to commemorate the women who served doughnuts to American soldiers in France during World War I. And while doughnuts have changed quite a bit over the years — some are made with bacon while others are topped with cereals, like Trix or Cap n’ Crunch — they remain a popular treat.
