Watts celebrated 20 years since the hit horror remake's release.

Two decades ago, horror movie fans were horrified, in a good way, by the release of The Ring. Now, the film's star, Naomi Watts, is celebrating The Ring's 20th anniversary with a tribute on Instagram.

The British-born Australian actress posted a montage video of parts of the classic horror film, captioning the update, "Who knew a videotape would scare the pants off everyone?! 📼😱 Where did those 20 years go #?! #TheRing."

Many people joined Watts in celebrating the film in the comments.

Actress Ali Wentworth wrote, "Even watching this scares me," while Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, who recently starred in a popular horror film called Ma, commented, "Loved you in this movie."

The comments were also filled with fans talking about how much they love the movie and how effective it is, even 20 years later, when movie-making technology has allowed films to be even more horrific.

One person wrote, "Seriously the scariest thing I ever saw. I can’t even watch a glimpse now. Still freaks me out."

The Ring is a remake of the Japanese horror film Ring, or Ringu, which came out in 1998. In the American version, Watts plays a journalist named Rachel who looks into her niece's strange death.

According to an urban legend, if you watch a supposedly cursed videotape, you are destined to die seven days later. After Rachel and her ex-boyfriend Noah (Martin Henderson) watch the video, they start seeing creepy imagery that helps them unravel the mystery of the curse and how it started.

When the film was released in 2002, Watts had just earned acclaim for her performance in the David Lynch-directed film, Mulholland Drive, and The Ring only made her more popular.

The actress starred in a sequel, The Ring Two, in 2005, and in 2017, the franchise was brought back for a third film, called Rings. Watts did not return for the most recent installment.
