Congrats are in order for tennis champion Naomi Osaka. On January 11, the four-time Grand Slam singles champion took to Twitter to announce that she is pregnant with her first child. She celebrated the big news with a picture of a sonogram, a copy of a statement written in both English and Japanese, and the caption, “Can’t wait to get back on the court but here’s a little life update for 2023.”

“The past few years have been interesting to say the least, but I find that it’s the most challenging times in life that may be the most fun,” she began before reflecting on life outside of tennis. “These few months away from sports has really given me a new love and appreciation for the game I’ve dedicated my life to. I realize that life is so short, and I don’t want to take any moments for granted, every day is a new blessing and adventure,” she added.

“I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘That’s my mom,’ haha. 2023 will be a year that’ll be full of lessons for me, and I hope I’ll see you guys in the start of the next one.” The 25-year-old revealed that while she plans to welcome a new child, she’ll be headed back on the court professionally in 2024. “I’ll be at Aus 2024,” she confirmed.

On June 3, Naomi and Cordae revealed the sex of their little one through an adorable slideshow of pics from what appeared to be a baby shower decked out in pink and lavender balloons and fresh flowers. “A little princess is on the way,” read a sign that Naomi posed in front of, announcing that the couple is expecting a baby girl at some point this year.

“Let’s normalize women tennis pros having a family and continuing to play. The men do! Congratulations on your new princess 💕,” wrote a supportive fan.

News of Naomi’s pregnancy comes as a complete surprise to fans who were expecting her to make a comeback this year. On January 7, the Women’s Tennis Association confirmed that Naomi withdrew from this year’s upcoming Australian Open without explanation. Today’s big news revealed the reason the two-time Australian Open champion will be missing out on this year’s tournament. Congratulations, Naomi!
