So, you're watching The Buccaneers, huh? The new AppleTV+ show, which dropped on Nov. 8, is bound to be a fan favorite for anyone who loves romance and period pieces. The story follows four bachelorettes—Nan (Kristine Froseth), Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse), Lizzy (Aubri Ibrag), and Mabel (Josie Totah)—and their married friend, Conchita Closson (Alisha Boe), as they travel to London during the spring and summer social season.

Although only three episodes have dropped so far, a lot has gone down already—from a wedding, to a few proposals, and even a brand new baby. At the moment, the show's main protagonist, Nan, is going through a bit of an identity crisis after finding out she's the child of her father's love affair and then getting trapped in a love triangle.

Yet, with all that, there are still five more episodes left to get through—so rest assured there's a lot more in store for these five ladies. Luckily, the limited series is based on a book by Edith Wharton, so there are a few places to look if you're trying to dissect the spoilers. Below, see everything that (could) come of The Buccaneers ending.

How is The Buccaneers series different from the book?

One interesting thing about the original Buccaneers book: it was never finished. The author, Edith Wharton, wrote 25 chapters of the novel before she died in 1937. For over 50 years, the novel remained unfinished. It abruptly cut off at a point that was presumably the story's climax, left only with some notes Wharton had written about how she planned to end the story (but more on that in a sec).

So, many years later, in 1993, an author named Marion Mainwaring penned an ending to the book, based on Wharton's original notes. Mainwaring's ending was quickly adapted into a new TV series, The Buccaneers, in 1995. In the newer AppleTV version, however, the book serves more as a source material for the story, rather than a direct adaptation, the creators told Screen Rant.

"We've done lots that's different from the book, of course, and we've taken that as a starting point and we've expanded the characters and we invented bits of it," Katherine Jakeways, the show's creator, told the publication.

Jakeways also only used the original, incomplete version of The Buccaneers as a source while creating the AppleTV version, per Bustle. So if you've read the book, you can probably expect some diversions from it's plot.

Wharton's notes dictate that Nan marries Theo, or the Duke of Tintagel. This is, of course, the main point of Nan's trip to London in the first place—she wants to find a man with status that could compliment her family's newfound wealth. However, Nan realizes that, despite the fact that Theo is perfectly nice, she doesn't actually like him all that much. In Wharton's words, he's arrogant and dull, per the novel's manuscript.

So, Nan ends up running off to South Africa to find Guy—the original London Boy she falls for at the beginning of the series. This is a serious scandal, and no one really approves of their choice—but hey, such is the cost of a happily-ever-after. And since Jakeways said she took most of her inspiration from this original manuscript, it's possible the AppleTV series will end the same way. Only time will tell.

What else happens at the end of The Buccaneers?

Sadly, it's not clear what happens for the other four bachelorettes at the end of the original novel. Wharton's notes do, however, include an ending for Miss Testvalley, the girls' governess who initially encourages them to go to London. This role is played by Simone Kirby in the AppleTV series.

It's Miss Testvalley who ultimately helps Nan flee to South Africa and find Guy. She is "disgusted" by Nan's husband's mediocrity, per the novel's manuscript, and believes she belongs with Guy. At the same time, she gives up a relationship with Guy's widower father—as he does not approve of his son marrying someone like Nan. After helping Nan, Miss Testvalley goes back to London "alone to old age and poverty," the novel reads.
