NAMI’s mission to eliminate the stigma of mental health

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – This Mother’s Day weekend brought out a big crowd to Creve Coeur Lake for the annual NAMIWalks St. Louis.

The non-profit National Alliance on Mental Illness leads the effort for better treatment and more services for children with mental health conditions. NAMI St. Louis provides no-cost mental health education, advocacy, and support for those with mental health needs. That support extends to families, caregivers, and the community as well.

“The size of the crowd is amazing. I mean, we’ve come a long way in the 22 years of the walk, and it’s just heartwarming to see all the people who came out today: the volunteers, the sponsors, the walkers; it’s fabulous,” Karen Matteuzzi, NAMI St. Louis board president, said.

Organizers say the event helps eliminate the stigma sometimes associated with mental health.

FOX 2’s Jeff Bernthal served as emcee for Saturday’s walk.
