'The New Mutants' reunite on Zoom and talk movie delays, breaking new ground in the superhero genre

The cast and writer/director of "The New Mutants" recently reunited over Zoom to speak with Yahoo Entertainment about their new movie, which is finally being released three years after being shot. "It's weird, I came out on the other end as a happy ending because I got to finish the film," says writer/director Josh Boone. He chalks up the delays to Disney's 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox's TV and film assets. Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Illyana Rasputin / Magik, sees a silver lining in the long process. "It's a wonderful exercise in learning how to let go," she says. The film also features a same-sex relationship between Maisie Williams's character, Rahne Sinclair, and Blu Hunt's character, Dani Moonstar. Williams thinks the film does a good job portraying her character, and her romantic relationship, in a three-dimensional way. "It's rare that you get to see a love story like that in superhero films but also in action movies," she says. "The New Mutants" arrives in theaters on August 28.
