It’s Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) birthday today—May 1, and in an interesting twist, STARZ has released photos of his daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) for Outlander fans to enjoy as they wait out the Droughtlander for season 7 to begin on June 16.

Season 7 will be based on two of bestselling author Diana Gabaldon’s novels, A Breath of Snow and Ashes (book 6) and An Echo in the Bone (book 7), as the sixth season was cut short due to COVID-19 and Caitríona’s pregnancy, so season 7 has been supersized into 16 episodes. The first eight will air this summer, and the remaining eight will not air until sometime in 2024.

It's hard to speculate about what will be in the first eight episodes of Outlander season 7 since no synopsis has yet been issued, but the release of the new opening sequence a while back revealed a few clues to readers of the books.

In the case of Bree and Roger, the big event will be the birth of their second child. It’s not a spoiler since it was revealed that she was pregnant in season 6.

What is up for speculation—and what happens in the books—is Bree and Roger and their kids go back to the future. From the appearance of the dazzling blue sapphire in the new opening credits—last seen in season 3 when Jamie handed it over to Lord John (David Berry) for safekeeping after his brief escape from Ardsmuir prison—it looks as if time travel will be happening. If it stays true to the books, it is due to a health crisis that demands 20th century medical intervention.

Outlander will return for its seventh season on June 16 on STARZ and the STARZ app.
