New Music Friday: New Songs from Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, NCT Dream, and More

It's a weird time for everyone right now, the music industry included. While some artists have pushed back new music release dates because of the pandemic, others have forged ahead (we see you, Dua Lipa) — and thank goodness they did, or we'd have nothing new to listen to.

For our first Teen Vogue Best New Music Friday, we've rounded up, well, the best new music from the past few weeks. There's a lot to unpack, from that surprise Megan Thee Stallion and Beyoncé collab to the exciting comeback from K-pop group NCT Dream. Meanwhile, the quarantine music video reigns supreme as performers continue to film content right from the comfort of their own homes.

Below, check out this week's selection of best new music.

Megan Thee Stallion x Beyoncé, "Savage" (Remix)

Unless you live under a rock, you've already heard this absolutely killer remix of Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage," featuring the one and only Beyoncé. In the remix, Bey complements Megan's clever chorus with verses that reference TikTok, OnlyFans, and Texas. She also gifts us what is perhaps the best lyric of the year: "If you don't jump to put jeans on, you don't feel my pain."

NCT Dream, "Quiet Down"

Look, there's a lot to love about NCT Dream's comeback album Reload, which dropped on April 29. It's their last album as a six-member subunit of NCT — the group recently announced a "reorganized" change to its age-based system, and superstar Mark Lee is rejoining the group (he's a busy guy). In the meantime, the five-track Reload is filled with hits, from lead single "Ridin'" (which got the music video treatment) to acoustic ballad "Puzzle Piece." But my personal favorite is "Quiet Down," a concise, EDM-y takedown track with a catchy rap cadence that's sick of rumors startin'.

Kehlani, "F&MU"

Kehlani is gearing up to release her a new full-length album on May 8, the relatably-titled, It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. The newest single is "F&MU," an NSFW acronym for a sexy ode to mixed feelings and mending, ahem, fences. It comes with an accompanying "quarantine style" video, featuring lots of spilled orange juice.

MAX x Hayley Kiyoko, "Missed Calls"

MAX and Hayley Kiyoko's trap-pop partnership has a simple premise: "I used to have so many missed calls, now I just sit around and miss your calls." That bit of slightly overdone wordplay is sweetened by Hayley's smirky confidence and smooth vocal and her almost-speaking pop approach that always feels intimate, like an inside joke. We need a new Hayley Kiyoko album ASAP, please.

Paloma Mami, "Goteo"

Chilean-American artist Paloma Mami gets the video game treatment in the music video for her newest song "Goteo." The most recent in a string of infectious singles, "Goteo" proves Paloma Mami's deftness with flow. The bouncy single melds Latin and pop-R&B sounds with an addictive little video gamey percussive chime that I want to hear on repeat.

Lexie Liu, "Hide and Seek 捉迷藏"

Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Lexie Liu has a knack for mournful ambience, and her skills are in top form on new song "Hide and Seek." The track blends English and Chinese for emotive couplets about being completely done with missing someone, over a delicious techno beat. What's more relatable than that?

JP Saxe, Julia Michaels & Friends, "If the World Was Ending"

Gal Gadot et al's "Imagine," this is not. JP Saxe and Julia Michaels reimagined their 2019 duet "If the World Was Ending" with an all all-star cast of performers that turns an eerily-foreshadowed ballad into a pretty emotional moment.

The cast of performers is stocked: H.E.R., Niall Horan, Keith Urban, Finneas, Alessia Cara, Jason Derulo, Kesha, Zara Larsson, Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Smith, The Rose, Anthony Ramos, Pink Sweat$, Jordan Davis, Sasha Sloan, Anne Marie, Noah Cyrus, Lindsey Stirling, Fletcher, Sabrina Carpenter, Evaluna Montaner, Camilo, Sam Nelson Harris (X Ambassadors), Maeta, Mau y Ricky, and Florida Georgia Line all get a moment to shine.

To top it off, proceeds from the video will go to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) as they provide COVID-19 relief.
