AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – Heading to the Fifth Street bridge you will see the murals, murals on the wall.

“I’ve heard nothing but great feedback from everybody coming up and down, people have been talking, hearing the stories about some of the paintings. It’s all been great,” said Rhian Swain, President of the Greater Augusta Arts Council board.

The walls on the side of Fifth Street leading to the bridge have turned into canvasses for more than three dozen muralists from all over.

“Some have come here from as far as like Minnesota and Denver. Lauren is from Dallas, I believe,” said Emily Bender one of the muralists.

Theron Cartwright lives in Augusta, now his mural is linking local people with their wild, wildlife.

“All the animals in this mural are animals you can find locally, so I wanted to get beautiful people, beautiful nature,” said Theron.

There was no central theme, so the artists could freewheel.

The murals include Augusta astronaut Susan Still, there is some cool fish, and even though some artists were putting the finishing touches on their works before Saturday’s ribbon cutting, some locals were getting a sneak preview.

“I was actually up here the first day they started and they’ve come a very long way beautiful.” said Glena Boxrud.

“I do this is great,” she said.

If you’re not feeling good about the murals, this one tells you to dance ’til you feel better. That sounds familiar…

“Yeah, it’s a lyric from one of James Brown’s songs, so all the dancing feet are 70’s, 60’s motif,” said Emily.
