Multicultural Festival seeking designs for logo contest

A logo contest is currently open to local artists for the Owensboro Multicultural Festival’s 26th year that will represent this year’s theme — “Threads of Unity.”

The free festival, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 17 on the lawn of First Presbyterian Church, welcomes over 2,000 people annually and includes a number of diverse exhibitors, food vendors and performers.

Jeff Moles, director of Christian education and mission at First Presbyterian Church, said similar contests have been held previously and finds initiatives like this provide opportunities “to let people participate more fully in the festival.”

“We want this to be a festival that belongs to the people of our community,” Moles said. “This is a great way for people with artistic talents to be part of … the visual design of the Multicultural Festival.”

Moles said the theme, “Threads of Unity,” was chosen by the festival’s planning committee based on the current climate locally.

“We were talking about some of the conversations that are going on in the community right now, and the purpose of the festival and why we think it’s particularly important at a time that is very divided,” Moles said. “One of the, kind of, concepts we had was thinking about the community as being fabric — something that we’re all woven together into; we’re all part of one fabric but we still retain our uniqueness and our diversity … as a tapestry.

“We were brainstorming themes that kind of had that image at its core ….”

Requirements for the logo design submissions include expressing the theme and the festival’s mission of celebrating cultural diversity. Additionally, the design should include no more than four colors or can be easily simplified into a four-color design.

“... We want (the logo) to be something that people will look at and easily understand that message of ‘Threads of Unity,’ ” Moles said.

Moles said there’s no preferred art medium “as long as it translates well into digital (form).”

The top 10 art submissions, which will be selected by the planning committee, will be on display at the festival.

The winning submission will be utilized on festival T-shirts, social media posts and additional promotional materials, while the designer will receive a free T-shirt and recognition in the festival program.

To submit a logo for the contest, send a PDF or photo file (.jpg or .png) of the design to Moles at jeff@fpcobky.com. Deadline to submit is June 1.

Moles said the winning design will be announced the first or second week of June.

Registration for exhibitors and food vendors is also open along with those interested in performing at the festival. For more information, visit fpcobky.com/multicultural-festival or facebook.com/owensboromulticulturalfestival.
