The New Mulan Trailer Will Make You Cry, Obviously

The trailer gods have blessed us this week; first Black Widow, then No Time to Die, and the new season of You. Now, our first real glimpse at the live-action remake of Disney’s beloved animated film Mulan has arrived. Watch it below:

While the original was heavy on the comic relief (remember Mushu the dragon’s eternal line, “Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow”?), the new film looks to be a pure heart-wrencher. Like her cartoon predecessor, Mulan—played by Chinese-American actress, singer, and model Liu Yifei—abandons the feminine trappings of her family life to fight in the Han army in her father’s place.

“It is my duty to protect my family,” Mulan intones as she escapes to fight, and we also get to see her doing some truly impressive sword work. The faint strains of “Reflection,” originally sung in the original by Lea Salonga, can be heard in the trailer, which may dredge up memories of Christina Aguilera, VHS tapes, and childhood in general.

Directed by Whale Rider director Niki Caro, the Mulan reboot raised some eyebrows because it would not be including the original music, but the trailer makes it clear that the story Caro is telling is a different version of Mulan than we’ve seen previously, even if the basic plot is the same. (We’re not getting Mushu back, either—he’s being replaced with a phoenix.)

In addition to Liu, Caro’s version of Mulan stars Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li. The release date is scheduled for March 27, 2020, so mark the date on your calendar and prepare to sob.
