Muhammad Ali’s 'Rumble in the Jungle' WBC Belt Sold for $6.18 Million USD

Back in 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire -- now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo -- Muhammad Ali claimed the heavyweight championship belt as he made a victorious win over George Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle" match. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay is now in possession of the historic memorabilia -- dropping $6.18 million USD to finalize the bid during Heritage Auction's recent showcase.

The WBC belt holds more history than just winning the title itself, but rather marks Ali's return to competitive boxing following the stripping of his boxing license and World Boxing Association title after refusing to serve in the Vietnam War. After seven long years, Ali was able to take to the ring once again and managed to knock out Foreman by the 8th round.

Similar to the fight, Irsay had a bout of his own during the bidding war and managed to come out on the winning end.

"After several hours of watching two bidders go back and forth over this belt, this proved to be a battle worthy of the Rumble itself," Chris Ivy, Heritage's Director of Sports Auctions, said in a press release.

The Colts owner currently holds a number of collectibles in relation to Ali, from the 1965 walkout robe following his name change from Cassius Clay to the shoes worn in the 1975 'Thrilla in Manila' fight against Joe Frazier.

Irsay's full collection of iconic tokens spanning from sports to music, literature and politics will be up on display at the Navy Pier in Chicago on August 2 and in Indianapolis on September 9.
