Tennis players everywhere dream of winning and placing at Wimbledon, the London tennis competition that’s regarded as the sport’s most prestigious tournament. After returning in 2021 following a two-year hiatus, we’re looking at the prize money to be won at the 2022 Wimbledon matches.

How Big Is the Winner’s Purse?

The total pot for this year’s Wimbledon tournament is £40.35 million ($49.55 million), resulting in a 15% increase compared to 2021’s £35 million.

However, the greatest payday is given to Wimbledon’s victors. The men’s and women’s singles winners will each earn £2 million ($2.5 million), an increase from last year’s £1.7 million ($2.35 million).

How Much Money Do Runners-Up Earn?

The runners-up will still earn a large amount of prize money, all increased from the 2021 matches. Runner-ups can gain £1,050,000 ($1.29 million), while semifinalists can net £535,000 ($636,000). Quarter-finalists can rake in up to £310,000 ($380,000). Anyone knocked out in the fourth, third, second and first rounds get £190,000 ($233,000), £120,000 ($147,000), £78,000 ($96,000), £50,000 ($61,000), respectively.

Who Are the Favorites?

Since Serena and Venus Williams did not make the 2022 Wimbledon entry list, the current one to beat in the women’s is Simona Halep. Ons Jabeur, Amanda Anisimova and Elena Rybakina are also ones to watch at the moment.

On the men’s end, Novak Djokovic is the player to beat this year. Aside from the Serbian tennis star, Rafael Nadal is one to watch after a three year-long hiatus from Wimbledon. Nick Kyrgios, Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner are also leading the odds in the 2022 tournament.

What Do Doubles Winners Earn?

Pay for doubles winners has reduced compared to 2021. The winning pairs for men’s and women’s doubles will pocket £540,000 ($682,000) this year, a lower payday compared to 2021’s £800,000 ($1,107,840). The mixed doubles victors will receive £124,000 ($148,251) per pair.

For big-name stars like Djokovic and Halep, there’s still plenty of opportunity to earn money, even without adding another trophy to the shelf. The athletes have lucrative endorsement deals, both in sneakers and apparel, and elsewhere.
