With the announcement of the official routes for the 2024 Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes, it’s easy to start counting down the days to July and August, respectively. And there’s plenty to be excited about for both races. The men start in Italy and end in Nice. They also have to contend with some gravel sections, and of course, endless climbs.

The women’s final stage takes on the Col du Glandon on the way to a summit finish at the iconic Alpe d’Huez. It will be the first time women have raced up Alpe d’Huez in the Tour de France in 31 years.

But there’s also still glaring disparities between the men’s and women’s races. Namely, money. According to the official Tour de France website, a total of 2.3 million euros will be awarded to the men’s teams and riders, including €500,000 to the winner of the overall individual classification.

For the women? A total of €250,000 will be awarded across the different stages, jerseys and team competitions, including €50,000 to the winner of the general classification. There will be 167 women racing, and 176 men, and at the end, the men’s teams will have a lot more prize money to show for it.

Beyond individual prize money, there’s the GC team money. Let’s look at those team purses. Here’s what the top ten men’s teams and the top ten women’s teams made at the 2023 Tour de France. Keep in mind most teams consist of 8 riders.

Women’s teams earn about 10 percent of what the men’s teams do

So the women’s teams are making approximately ten percent the amount that the men’s teams are. Split 8 ways, looking at the 10th highest earning team for the men, each still walks away with €7,337. The women’s 10th highest earning team? Each rider walks with a mere €395. Not exactly parity.

Tour de France prize money is independent of each rider’s salary, but one way to support equal payouts is to support women’s racing. Watch it, talk about it, prove that it’s every bit as important as men’s racing.
