MTV VMAs 2019: We Talked to Jay “Stay Ready” About How To Get Normani's Red Carpet Hairstyle

Since dropping her debut single "Motivation" last week — as well as the viral music video for itNormani has been showing everyone that she is the true definition of a pop star and we are HERE. FOR. IT. Casually twerking on a fence with her friends? That insane basketball trick? Her handstand into a split? Step aside, Ariana, because Normani is the pop queen we've been waiting for. It's no surprise, then, why so many we were excited for Normani to perform at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. And while her first live performance of "Motivation" did, indeed, blow us away, what we truly can't get over is how stunning she looked.

Before taking the stage, Normani walked the red carpet in an bedazzled strapless, asymmetrical dress by Lebanese designer Nicolas Jebran, pairing it with a glossy lip and purple sunrise eye shadow. Her hair, of course, matched the outfit perfectly. Hairstylist Jay “Stay Ready” tells Teen Vogue that Normani's hairstyle was inspired by the '90s, just like her video for "Motivation."

"We have been obsessing with '90s style, so of course we wanted to stay with the theme we have been keeping up with lately," Jay says. "Itʼs so fun to work with Normani because weʼre not too far apart in age and weʼre both heavily influenced by the same things. So when itʼs time to brainstorm looks itʼs effortless, because she trusts that I can see her vision and we typically are already on the same wavelength. She or I send each other inspiration weʼve found and then go back and forth building off of that until we feel confident that we have nailed the style objective for that moment."

For tonight's look, Jay used Suave products to achieve the perfect style. "I washed and conditioned with Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Moisturizing Curl Conditioner, blow dried and added extensions and pressed straight using Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Define & Shine Serum Gel, and finished the look with Suave Professionals Firm Control Finishing Hairspray," he tells Teen Vogue.

Jay suggests blowdrying using a high-speed hair dryer with a diffuser. When it comes to pressing her hair straight, he shares that he curls the hair at the ends to get that wavy finish. For those looking to achieve this look at home, Jay tells Teen Vogue readers that, "The combination of a great heating tool and Suave Professionals Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Define & Shine Serum Gel will help you achieve our red carpet look while keeping the hair flow-y, shiny, and most importantly, frizz free all day!"

Grab yourself a straightener and some motivation, and go try this look out at home to live out your Normani fantasy. And if you follow Jay's step by step guide, your hair will even stay in place while you successful try to nail Normani's insane basketball trick.
