Mt. Hood Meadows Joins The Cashless Business Movement

Mt. Hood Meadows, Oregon, announced yesterday on Facebook that they are going cashless ahead of the 2023-2024 ski season.

More details from the Facebook post below.

In a blog post, Meadows tapped Derek Gibbs, the resort's chief finance officer, to explain the decision:

"Derek Gibbs, chief finance officer for Mt. Hood Meadows, says the shift away from handling cash will help streamline internal operations at the resort, as well as make the purchasing process more efficient for guests. “We’re excited about this change. Going cashless will enhance our guest experience by providing faster transactions, enhanced speed of service, and shorter wait times,” said Gibbs."

Meadows also pointed out in the blog post that, according to a 2022 Pew Research Center survey, more than 40% of Americans don't use cash at all in their everyday lives.

What if you arrive at the resort with only cash, though?

Meadows has planned for this contingency. At the resort, there will be three reverse ATMs, one each located at Hood River Meadows, the Sahale Lodge, and the first floor of the Main Lodge.

At these reverse ATMs, you put your cash in, and the machine spits out an equivalent Visa-branded debit card that works at any establishment providing cashless Visa service (read: pretty much everywhere), not just Meadows.

These cards will not have an activation fee and will contain the exact amount of money deposited.

In the comments section of the Facebook post, Meadows stated that it will continue accepting cash tips for services going forward.

By going cashless, Meadows joins several resorts that have adopted similar business measures, like Snowbird, Killington, and Big Sky.
